Last year, my wife and I went to the…
…33rd Annual Las Vegas Snow Mountain Paiute Powwow…
…just North of Las Vegas off US-95.
In fact, the Paiute Powwow is on the way to Mt. Charleston.
It’s an easy drive, light traffic, very convenient.
Once you exit Exit 99, turn left on Paiute Drive, drive over the bridge straight and you enter the Paiute Tribe Reservation. Don’t let the dirt road fool you, it’s graded.
The Powwow grounds are a mile up marked by a dozen white vender tents dotting the horizon like an Arabian bazaar.
Parking is on the left. The Powwow is on the right.
Everybody we met at the Powwow was very nice.
It was a sunny day, but temperatures were mild.
Still, it’s the desert – sunglasses, sunblock and sombrero.
I have been to a number of Powwows and this was a wonderful event.
It’s a big place, well manicured, great setting, family oriented.
For guests, the Powwow provided grandstand seating under tents…
…but there was plenty of room for foldout chairs, picnics and children gone wild.
The Paiute Powwow is also very popular with Native American performers.
We saw many talented performers and equally amazing costumes.
I would guesstimate over 300 performers were there last year.
Substantial cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place…
…in each age-category and drum crews…
…were provided by the Snow Mountain Paiute Tribe.
As well, there more than a dozen Native American Princess…
…from all over Western United States and Canada.
There were even six drum crews on hand.
What is a Powwow?
Powwows, as many are unaware, is both a solemn ceremony and a celebration of the past and present by honoring the land, the bounty provided by the land and our ancestors. A Powwow is both sacred ritual and social engagement. Uniquely, its Native American origins center around harmony, peace and cooperation as a Powwow means “a gathering of the tribes.”
What will you see at a Powwow?
The formal start to a Powwow is the Grand Entry. The Native American Veteran Honor Guard leads the solemn procession into the circle. There are prayers and moments of silence respecting those who have gone before us. With breaks in between, Native American dignitaries and representatives are introduced and speak. Then the Powwow breaks out as the circle continues to grow. Public participation is encouraged and appreciated. Then the Powwow accelerates into the turn of the main event – competitive dancing.
